What first attracted me to this Toshiba netbook is the color….being brown my favorite. As I explored the different reviews and not to mention being considered as one of the top ten notebooks for 2009, I decided to get one from Amazon for myself. I had to ask a friend from Hawaii to bring it home to the Philippines. My netbook did not fail me. I love the long battery hours and normal keyboard. It’s portability being super light weight is a plus. I never had problems with the wifi connection as others do. Though I plan to add 1gb of ram to boost its boot up time but other than that it’s great. I would recommend it to anybody who intends to buy a netbook. A Steller netbook. The only complaint I have is with the speakers. They provide good sound however their location means that you almost never hear the sound. Runs Windows XP without fault. Never gets too warm even if in use while charging. The BATTERY LIFE IS AMAZING. 10+ hours if you adjust the settings a little bit. With decent screen brightness and a better performance setting I average about 6.5 hours so still excellent. The keyboard is great but the thumbpad is on the tiny side so be prepared to grab a mini mouse. Also the pad can be a bit touch at times; I’ve found that the zoom function the thumbpad has tends to be especially touchy. One second you’re typing an email and you just touch the pad and the screen zooms in and out. Kinda funny after you get used to it. Just have to memorize where the zoom function on your browser is so you can re-adjust as trying to use the zoom function on purpose is a bit annoying. If I had to buy a netbook all over again I would’ve bought the same model. Samsung has released newer models, but this is still the best netbook money can buy if you can find one new. ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK
I got my ASUS EEE 1005PE a week ago. I’m impressed. I did upgrade the RAM to 2GB and the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium, but this netbook worked as promised out of the box. Thanks to the reviewers who did such a great job accurately reflecting the quality of this product.
The display is crisp. Sometimes glare is a problem under some conditions. The processor is fast for such a small machine. I notice that, although the machine boots quickly, it does take a little while for it to stabilize which makes the computer a little slow for the first few minutes. Not a big deal.
The only complaint I have is the keyboard. The right shift key is half-size. I continually miss it. I’m hoping that practice makes perfect.

Like many who have reviewed before me I chose the ASUS 1201N based on the positive feedback from buyers and a glowing recommendation from Laptop Magazine. The size is perfect and the design is very nice for the ASUS 1201N.
However, the slow hard drive is noticeable and “Super Performance” mode still doesn’t cut it (my wife’s ASUS 1005HA is faster). I see that several buyers upgraded to a 7200rpm drive. I have already purchased and upgraded the RAM to 4GB (this does nothing for speed but it allows me to have a whole lot more going on at one time). So perhaps a hard drive upgrade is in order but spending $200 to upgrade memory and hard drive on a $500 machine puts it in another product class and kind of defeats the purpose.
First, however, I have to see about a new problem that has arisen recently.
About a week after receiving my ASUS 1201N it started “randomly” shutting off. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason. It could be running on AC or battery and I might have five applications open or none. The machine is vented well.
So I Googled “asus 1201n shuts off” and selected the ASUSTek Computer Inc. Forum link. For the next half hour my stomach lurched as I read report after report (seven pages, to be exact) of buyers having the same problem. Sometimes the issue seemed related to the USB mouse driver, other times to overheating because the cooling fan failed to start after awaking from sleep mode. At the time I am writing this review ASUS does not seem to have a solution and buyers had started returning their 1201Ns.
So I will give this another week or so and see if the problem can be resolved with a BIOS fix or software patch and then I’ll decide if I will return the machine.

I picked one of these up largely due to the number of positive comments here on Amazon and the great info contained in the reviews. I originally wanted a 12″ netbook and that’s about as far as my requirements went, but then when I found out that there were Ion-based netbooks, this became the clear choice. It does play 720p (and even 1080p though I don’t try it often) flawlessly as long as you’re using a codec that supports Nvidia’s CUDA (such as CoreAVC for Windows).
The keyboard is good, I can type relatively fast on it but let’s not pretend it’s up to snuff for someone who types a lot on full size keyboards. Likewise, the trackpad is a bit small but it is accurate enough.
The wifi with the bundled Windows 7 works great – even better than my wife’s Macbook. Connects quickly and has very strong reception.
The screen is gorgeous, especially for a netbook, though the glossy aspect is a turnoff for me – glare city. I’ve learned to live with it but a matte version would definitely be an improvement IMO.
The addition of an HDMI port is a nice touch, though I’m yet to try it.
My only other criticism would be that the battery life, while never advertised to be on par with other netbooks, is even lower than expected – my battery meter claims 3 hours on a full charge, though it’s probably a bit longer. But no way is it the advertised 5 hours, even if you’re not watching any video at all. Still, you have you realize what you’re getting into with this machine – it’s very powerful for something its size, and that power comes at a price. So if you need marathon battery life, I wouldn’t recommend this one. But if you want a powerful netbook that can play HD video (and is reasonably peppy besides, though not up to say, ULV standards), this is a very solid choice.

We were very pleased with the previous version of Asus’ Eee PC 1008HA that represented a radical change in the design of the rectangular Eee PC from the past. The laptop works as promised at first, but within a few weeks it began to freeze up and the cursor would disappear regularly. At month 5, the battery completely stopped charging so I could no longer use it unless it was plugged into the wall – I purchased this laptop primarily for the battery life. I tried multiple times to reach the ASUS help desk to resolve the problem only to hold for over 30 minutes each time. I finally logged a case online to protect the six month warranty. They wrote back and told me I had to call customer service to get a replacement battery. Again, after holding for 42 minutes I reached an agent that told me it was now past the six month warranty and I had to pay $180 for a new battery – HALF THE COST OF THE COMPUTER and that my email “didn’t count” even though there was a case number. When I asked him if I could send the email to him he told me that he didn’t have email! I am completely disgusted with this product and the service level. I have written to ASUS customer service and they will not respond. Sony has made a big mistake in how they represented the net book or mini-Vaio. Sony, apparently, can not produce a PC-style netbook with competitive battery and send it with a monster high-capacity battery, which is competitive and takes 7 hours, but ruin the elegance of your computer. Although the site of Sony laptop from Amazon and this current in each photo with a thin profile and a small battery to maintain assets of 7 hours.
Big lie. Or should we cut to the point that is a lie and misleading. The computer comes with a battery of large capacity, which is the only one that can last 7 hours and the reason is not pictured because he loved the mini Vaio seems to have a tumor that grows from it. Profile is not something that is portrayed in all the pictures on the Sony and Amazon.
I love the computer itself – is fantastic, and unlike some netbooks will run more programs than just surf and have an incredible 250GB.
He put me in a dilemma, as I love the PC, but I hate the battery, and certainly do not want to buy another battery for $ 89, with a capacity of only 2.5 hours.
Amazonas in all its glory was right for me and send me the real standard battery at no cost, allowing me to keep the battery from the tumor, sometimes I need battery life. He does not make me really happy to have just a battery life of 2.5, but for those times, I want the softness would be perfect.
